Installation Instructions For
"Country Classic" Fir Flooring
Materials Need For Installation
- Floor Nailer for Tongue & Grove Flooring
- Construction Adhesive (one quart tube/100 sq. ft). Do not use
water base glue! (use of adhesive is the secret of a quality installation)
- #8d or #10d finish nails
- Sandpaper
- Heavy Duty vacuum cleaner
- Paint brushes & rollers, paint thinner, five gallon bucket for
mixing finish.
- "low Lustre" Polyurethane finish (such as Benjamin Moore "Benwood"
#421 00 finish or Columbia Polyurethane.)
Steps
- Our flooring is normally shipped at a moisture content or 8%.
We usually do not recommend unpacking it and stickering it for
acclimation prior to installation. Due to the vast difference
in climates it is up to the installer to decide what the test
moisture level is for the climate. It can be installed over radiant
heat, however please call for special instructions. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND INSTALLATION AS A FLOATING FLOOR.
- Determine the direction of the flooring so it runs perpendicular
to the floor joists. This will allow you to nail into the joists
with the face nails and flooring nails to keep the joints tight.
- Determine a starting point. This can be a long wall with few obstacles.
if the room does not have a good starting wall, then start in
the center of the room and work both directions from the center.
- Snap a straight chalk line for the first piece. Determine this
by measuring the room for square.
- Remember to always dry-fit all pieces before applying glue. Due
to the characteristics of the material each piece should be fitted
before application of the glue.
- After prefitting all pieces, squaring all ends, and vacuuming
the sub-flooring, apply a heavy bead of glue to the underside
of the flooring. Place along starting point nailing into tongue
at approximately every 2ft. on center. (Remember that proper gluing
of the material before nailing will produce a solid, professional
installation).
- After installation, check each seam for a match. If seams do not
evenly match, sand the higher edge round to remove splinters and
prepare edge for sealer. Also check knots and extra rough grain
as these areas may need extra sanding to make them acceptable
for finish. The flooring is sanded at our facility before shipping
and any further sanding is a Personal Preference of the installer.
- Vacuum the entire floor thoroughly removing all dust and foreign
debris. If the floor is not clean it will prevent the finish from
adhering properly. Apply first coat of sealer with a roller using
a mixture of three parts polyurethane to one part paint thinner.
This thing mixture will penetrate the wood giving an excellent
base for the final finish. If you wish to tint or stain the flooring
you may stain it directly before the application of the sealer
coat, or for convenience you may have the tint premixed in the
polyurethane sealer.
- Apply final coats (without cutting with paint thinner) and allow
to dry thoroughly between coats. If more coats are desired it
is the decision of the installer and /or owner. (We recommend
three to four coats of final seeler for a deep, smooth finish.
We also recommend sanding the floor before application of the
final coat.) Carefully apply the final coat to avoid puddles,
skips, or bubbles. Notes:
- Waxing is not needed and it will impede future efforts to refinish
the floor.
- If the finish is applied at a rate of one coat per day the final
coat will be soft for four to five days while it cures. Use care
during this curing process to avoid damaging the floor.
- Until the finish cures, use caution when moving furniture or appliances
to avoid marking the floor.
- Clean with damp mop and mild detergent.
